Pre-purchased English Language Tuition (PELT)

You can use your Pre-purchased English Language Tuition (PELT) to enrol in our English for Migrants programme. Learn English one-on-one at home, or wherever you choose, or join a class.

Eligibility

To enrol, you must:

  • be an adult (we cannot teach school students)
  • be in New Zealand
  • have paid Immigration NZ for English lessons before you arrive in New Zealand. This is known as Pre-purchased English Language Tuition (PELT).

Learn one-on-one

Private lessons with a qualified English language teacher are a fantastic way to build confidence and knowledge.

Lessons are usually twice a week.

Learning one-on-one means you can:

  • decide with your teacher where and when to study (including online or at home)
  • go at your own speed
  • choose what you want to study. For example, Kiwi expressions and grammar, or learning the English you need to get your driver’s licence or make an appointment.

Learn in a class

You can choose to spend your PELT on an English class, either online or in a classroom.

When you contact us, we can tell you about the classes available in your area.

Cost

You must use Pre-purchased English Language Tuition (PELT) to pay for English for Migrants classes.

Material provided by the teacher is free. However, if you want to study from special books you will need to pay for them.

2025 costs

Costs are increasing on 1 January 2025.

Our administration fees:

  • $110 for the first contract (including GST)
  • $66 for each additional contract (including GST).

 Learn one-on-one:

  • $110 per hour (including GST)

 Learn in a class:

  • $30.50 per hour (including GST)

Example: How you could spend your PELT

You have $1,531.82 and want to study one-on-one. After taking out the 2025 administration fee of $110, you have $1,421.82.

One-on-one lessons are $110 per hour.

You have enough to pay for 13 hours of one-on-one lessons.

Testimonials from our

Learners

The teacher is exceptional and did not (only) teach us specific knowledge, she taught us how to fish. This kind of style of teaching reformed my previous way of learning English.

The course was very useful. The teacher's attitude and inspiration motivated me to learn English. I decided to work hard to improve my language, which is a barrier in the communication. I learnt the importance of stress, intonation and language functions which helped me to improve my pronunciation. I would like to join in her class anytime if I get a chance.😊

Hardy Hko

I got a good chance to learn English because I had workmates and I asked them to teach me, and they were good Kiwis and happy to teach me. We would speak together at lunchtime and go to the shops together and after a year, my English had improved.

Before you helped me get this job, it was like all the doors were locked and everything was in darkness, and now it is like the lights are all on and I can go in.

Look what I have done. I have travelled 10,000 kilometres to start a new life. If I can do that, I can do anything.

We all live in a global village, and education plays an important part. People have always accepted my 'Chinglish' but the improvement [in my English] over the past year has amazed even me.
